I really did feel like quite the bum at times from the end of April to the beginning of June. I met one of the most great people I know today and was able to connect with him because we were both 'bums' or better said 'homeless'. I really believe everything happens for a reason and meeting Forrest was a highlight for me this last semester. We hardly spent enough time together, but I felt fulfilled every time I was around him. I learned a lot of things from him and was constantly living in the moment around him. There wasn't any time not to enjoy the present. Yet another teacher in my life...I am so lucky.
When I had moments to myself in the last six weeks, which was fairly rare, I daydreamed often about the human race. I have so much faith in people. There is so much good and people are so willing to help when they can....
Many reading are probably thinking...'what naivety!?!?' I can understand those thoughts, but can you understand me when I say this: ---If we all thought of one another with the utmost faith, the world would be almost perfect. We all just need a little more faith and trust in one another---
Well, that is what I thought about often during my weeks being homeless. People were constantly helping me and it made me want to do the same as often as I could.
Being homeless had its luxuries...I saved almost $700 in rent for the semester and I met new friends and I was restricted from being lazy. But let me just make it clear that I was homeless by choice...I cannot push that point enough...I had a choice. Many people don't.
This choice was nothing but a help for me in my life. It taught me so many things. It taught be how to be resourceful and at the same time not to worry too much, because truly things will work out;
because truly we are all homeless in this world constantly looking for a new home or an old one.
I am a big quote person, so here are some good quotes about 'homelessness' that I enjoyed.
"People who are homeless are not social inadequates. They are people with no homes." -Sheila McKechnie
"You can spend the money on new housing for poor people and the homeless, or you can spend it on a football stadium or a golf course." Jello Biafra
"Persons who have been homeless carry within them a certain philosophy of life which makes them apprehensive about ownership." -Jerzy Kosinski
