180 Degrees South

Well, I have been a little on the unmotivated side lately...I would have to say that is the understatement of the century. I feel completely unmotivated to do anything. period. Today was no exception. Today was probably the worst of that, as well as yesterday.

I just finished watching 180 degrees south and it was fabulously interesting. I do not know if I would go out and do some of the things they did, but I definitely feel the same way about how nature makes me feel and how it all changes me. I gathered some great quotes from the movie that made me think; it made me feel only a little bit more passionate about my life.

Here are some of them:

"For me adventure is when everything goes wrong. That is when the adventure starts"

"Men do not learn much from the lessons of history and THAT is the biggest lesson of history."

[Climbing to the top of a mountain] "is kinda like the quest for the holy grail; well, who gives a s*&@ what the holy grail is. It is the quest that is important. The transformation within yourself; that's what is important."

"In the far corners of the world I am seeing the effects of encroaching progress. Most of this has to do with over consumption elsewhere. It is easy for us to over consume when we don't see the effect it has on other places."

"The hardest thing in the world is to simplify your life. It's so easy to make it complex. Whats important is leading an examined life because most of the damage caused by humans is caused unintentionally."

"And in response to people saying you can't go back...well what happens when you get to the cliff and you take one step forward or you take a 180 degree turn and you take one step forward, which way are you going? and which is progress???"

"A solution for a lot of the world's problems is to turn around and make one step forward. You can't just keep trying to make a flawed system work."

"My whole life i've been drawn to open country. I always return a little different."

"Each of us in our own way have got to do something...save your soul...whatever that is."

There is some food for thought. I felt that a lot of these quotes really fit me well and really made me think and even chuckle at times, because I truly felt in agreeance with their ideals. I cannot say that I will go so far as to try and stop certain companies from building dams or destroying great natural land, but I also do not necessarily agree with the people building the dams. I have yet to form a complete opinion on the subject due to lack of knowledge. This movie planted some seeds for me. It was a pleasant experience.

I also wanted to mention how impressed I was with the lives of Yvon and Doug. Yvon started Patagonia (the name brand) and Doug started The North Face. That is just one of the many things they have done with their lives and definitely not their mostest proudest accomplishments...quite on the contrary to be exact.
